SANGER — Sanger blew open a close game with an eight-run fifth inning to defeat Aubrey 11-1 in Game 1 of their Class 3A bi-district series on Friday night.

The Indians (21-6) trailed 1-0 early before tying the game in the second inning. It was still 1-1 entering fourth, when Sanger scored twice as Austen Lange doubled in Ted Wisdom and Julien Ly, running for Lange, scored on a double by Roy Hedgecock.

In the fifth inning, Sanger exploded for eight runs as Anthony Escobedo’s two-run double ended the game via run rule.

In the Indians’ big inning, Chance Cockrell had two hits and drove in a run, while Escobedo added an RBI single to his game-ending double. Halen Frazier had an RBI double, while Wilding Smith and Hedgecock each added run-scoring singles.

Early on, questionable calls went against the Indians, and it seemed to affect the home team. In the top of the third inning, Sanger head coach Steve Ford had to be asked to return to the dugout after what appeared to be a missed baserunner interference call on a strong bunt to second base.

But Indians starting pitcher Ross Scott settled down and retired the next seven batters, including a stretch of five straight strikeouts. He finished with nine strikeouts, and the run he gave up in the second inning was unearned.

Justin Sorenson scored Aubrey’s only run after reaching on an infield single.

Sorenson came home on Blake Blackwell’s bunt to tie the game at 1.

Game 2 will be at noon today in Aubrey. Game 3, if necessary, will follow Game 2.
