Football: Braswell commits five turnovers, 11 penalties in loss

By the time Braswell looked up at the scoreboard, the game already was out of reach.

Sherman's defense forced five turnovers, all in the first half, en route to a 49-21 victory Friday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.

"Honestly, the beginning of the game was a blur," Braswell coach Cody Moore said. "The turnovers were a byproduct of the amount of penalties we had."

Braswell (0-6, 0-2 District 5-5A) recorded seven penalties in the first quarter as Sherman built a commanding 28-0 lead. By halftime, Braswell committed 11 penalties for 102 yards.

The Bengals finished with 17 penalties for 125 yards, compared to Sherman's six for 70 yards.

When the Bengals would put together a decent drive on offense, a penalty would back them up.

In the 28-point first quarter, Sherman running back Nathaniel Omayebu III had two 1-yard touchdowns, backup running back Michael Wallace added a score and quarterback Blaise Bentsen found Jaylyn Cleamons on a fade for a touchdown.

Braswell's first turnover came when punter Arturo Ramirez took a low snap and had his punt blocked. Omayebu added his first touchdown a play later. The Bengals' second turnover was a tough pill to swallow as the offense drove the ball 55 yards to the Sherman 6-yard line. Sophomore quarterback Greyson Thompson completed six passes before he threw a slant that Austin Blindel reached around Jaeden Johnson's back to intercept.

Thompson did his best to tackle Blindel on the return, but he had blockers in front to take it 100 yards for a touchdown.

"The kid made a good play on the ball and had some blockers down field," Moore said. "There were a few times we got out of our own way tonight, but overall, I think in the second half is where we showed flashes of what we can do on the field. We just have to be more consistent."

At halftime, Sherman led 42-7.

Jaeden Johnson recored the lone Braswell score in the first half; a 71-yard punt return. It was exactly what the Bengals needed heading into the second half.

Thompson threw three interceptions in the first half, but he hung in there the rest of the night and  completed 28 of his 44 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns to go with the interceptions.

"I was proud of the way he stayed confident throughout the game despite the turnovers in the first half," Moore said. "He was in the locker room at halftime ready to warm up.

"He led the offense well in the second half, and we saw what we can do offensively when we get him some time in the pocket. He's maturing every week, so he's only going to get better."

Sully Martinez led the Bengals with 91 receiving yards on eight catches and a touchdown late in the game. Johnson added with seven catches for 76 yards.

Jordan Joyce caught one pass, but it went for a touchdown. The scores by him and Martinez were their first of their varsity careers.

"As a coaching staff, we all knew how good Jordan can be, and he's been showing us in practice, which is why you saw what he did for us tonight," Moore said. "Sully will put on more weight and be a mismatch for any defender."

On Thursday, Braswell hosts Wichita Falls Old High, which has won two games this season — one better than last year when Braswell was its lone win.
