Football: Returns power Lions’ 97-12 rout

The Calvary Academy Lions used their speed, athleticism and a strong return game to totally overwhelm Carrollton Harmony 97-12 on Friday night at Bronco Field.

Calvary returned three kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns and also had an interception return for a TD as the Lions evened their record at 2-2.

Jesse Wells amassed 247 yards of total offense to go along with five total touchdowns. Matt Hood had 64 yards rushing, 82 yards receiving and five total scores. Justin Rush threw for 106 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

Calvary rolled up 42 first-quarter points and led 60-0 before Carrollton finally got on the scoreboard. Wells scored four times in the first quarter on a 75-yard kick return, a 35-yard interception return, a 26-yard run and a 71-yard punt return.

Rush connected with Hood on TD throws of 39 and 22 yards and Drew White added four extra point kicks.

The Lions piled up 55 points in the second quarter with Hood scoring three times on runs of 45 and 7-yards and caught a 21-yard TD pass from Rush. Brandon Eaton had a 70-yard kickoff return, Joe Autwell had a 64-yard kick return, Brayden Humphrey scored on a 71-yard run and Wells scored on a 4-yard run. White added four extra point kicks before the game was stopped at halftime due to the mercy rule.

Calvary will be at Irving Universal next Friday night.
