North Texas could not find its rhythm on the backend of its season-ending Florida road trip and was knocked off by Florida International in three sets — 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 — on Sunday in Miami.
“We came out flat and, on the road, you just can’t win like that,” UNT head coach Andrew Palileo said. “We need to pick up our energy and intensity, and I believe we will do that. I will address that in the coming days as we prepare for our first Conference USA tournament.”
FIU controlled the tempo of the match and held the Mean Green attack to a mere .159 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Carnae Dillard led UNT with 12 kills while adding eight digs. Junior Eboni Godfrey had a team-high 12 digs, while freshman setter Amy Henard recorded 26 assists.
The Mean Green (16-13) fell to 8-6 in C-USA play with the loss and ended up as the fifth seed for the league tournament that begins this week in Murfreesboro, Tenn. UNT will play Florida Atlantic in a first-round match at 2 p.m. Thursday. The finals are at 1 p.m. Sunday.
