Swimming: UNT’s Burkard places third in 500

ATLANTA — North Texas junior Jana Burkard earned the Mean Green’s first medal at the Conference USA meet with a third-place finish in the 500-meter freestyle on Thursday.

The Mean Green was in fifth place overall, with defending champion Rice in the lead.

Burkard’s time of 4:48.92 was a season best, although she could not hold off defending champion Erin Flanigan (4:44.53) of Rice or Florida International’s Sonia Perez Arau (4:45.06).

UNT’s Krista Rossum was a finalist in the 200 individual medley. Her time of 2:02.09 placed her fifth in the event.

In the 50 freestyle, Michelle Balcaen’s swim of 23.86 for UNT earned her a spot in the consolation finals, where she placed 20th.

On the 3-meter board, senior diver Rebecca Taylor had the highest score for North Texas with a 253.55. Catherine Johnson rounded out the top 10 with a score of 235.45.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Rossum, Mona Groteguth, Balcaen and Bianca Bocsa posted a season-best time of 1:34.69 to place fifth.
