AUSTIN — TWU split its final nonconference doubleheader of the season Wednesday at St. Edward’s, winning 3-0 and losing 2-1.
In the opener, TWU senior Brandie Lander pitched her third straight shutout to pick up her 19th win. She allowed four hits while striking out five batters.
TWU senior Bailey Vrazel started the game with a double to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kendra Sancet. Sarah Wittenburg made it 2-0 in the second with her second home run of the season. TWU pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Samantha Alegria.
After a scoreless first inning in second game, the Hilltoppers scored two runs in the second. TWU cut its deficit in half in the fourth on Sancet’s team-leading 18th home run. The Pioneers put runners on first and second with one out in the sixth but could not drive home the tying run.
Katie Hines started in the circle and allowed three hits and two runs in five innings for the loss.
“We had a pitchers’ duel in both games,” TWU coach Genny Stidham said. “Brandie pitched another gem and did not allow any scoring opportunities for St. Edward’s. We scored a couple of runs early in the game, and that’s all she needed. Katie also pitched well in the second game, but we did not give her any run support.”
The No. 25 Pioneers (28-14) will host Tarleton State at 1 p.m. Saturday in their final home doubleheader.
