The 2010-11 TWU basketball team now has some shiny new jewelry to accompany the red championship banner that hangs in Kitty Magee Arena.
The members of the squad earned rings for their Lone Star Conference tournament championship last season. It was the first conference championship in the history of TWU basketball.
The ceremony took place between the second and third sets of TWU's volleyball match against Central Oklahoma.
"It's kind of surreal, because of all the adversity we overcame to win the championship," head coach Beth Jillson said. "It's just neat to signify the championship with the ring."
The team was joined by TWU President Ann Stuart, LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon, athletic director Chalese Connors and faculty athletic representative Don Edwards. The donors who pitched in for the rings were recognized on-court and were presented a plaque that contains a note of thanks and a team picture.
Former guard Kayla Weaver, who led the team in scoring last season with 15.1 points per game, returned to the arena for the first time since the spring. She said it was exciting to see not only her former teammates and coaches, but the jewelry that represented the team's championship run.
"All we've been talking about is, we can't wait to put the ring on our finger," Weaver said.
