The TWU volleyball team split two matches on the first day of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Classic on Friday at Kitty Magee Arena. After sweeping Arkansas-Monticello, 25-15, 25-15, 25-11, the Pioneers fell to Arkansas Tech, 25-15, 25-20, 25-23.
Junior Viktorija Jablonska led the Pioneer attack with 21 kills, including 12 against Arkansas-Monticello. She also finished with eight block assists in both games. Freshman Hannah Marshall recorded 20 and 21 assists, respectively.
"We were loose and had fun on the court in the first game," said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. "Against Arkansas Tech, our offense struggled early."
The Pioneers continue tournament play today with two more matches. TWU will face Southeastern Oklahoma State at 12:30 p.m. and Texas A&M-International at 6:30 p.m.
TWU falls at No. 4 ACU
ABILENE - TWU junior Jillian Fuerman and freshman Candice Davies each scored a goal but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers fell to No. 4 Abilene Christian, 4-2. The Wildcats scored three second-half goals.
ACU got on the scoreboard in the second minute to take a 1-0 lead. Fuerman tied it at the 24:06 mark on a header off the corner kick inside the 6-yard box. Junior Katy Black picked up the assist.
Davies put TWU in front, 2-1, in the 39th minute. She collected the ball off of a turnover and banked it off the near post.
In the second half it was all ACU as the Wildcats outshot TWU 20-0, including 9-0 on goal. Abilene Christian tied the game in the 51st minute before taking the lead in the 61st minute.
Junior Beatrice Soto started in the net for the Pioneers and made a career-high 11 saves.
TWU visits Midwestern State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
