TWU posted a .270 hitting percentage Saturday to cruise to a 25-21, 25-15, 25-18 victory over visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville.

TWU’s Viktorija Jablonska and Marcela Alves each had a match-high 11 kills while Chloe’ Tate and Torie Talkington added eight kills apiece. Morgan Wilson was the leader on defense with 17 digs and Kayla Rivero added 24 assists.

“We talked about minimizing the hitting errors in practice all week, and we did that today,” TWU head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We got contributions from all the players that were suited. It’s a good weekend.”

The Pioneers (15-5, 9-3 Lone Star) posted a .255 hitting percentage in first set. Jablonska led the team with five kills while Tate added four.

In the second set, TWU had only two errors and hit .286 to cruise to a 10-point win. Wilson posted seven digs on defense.

In the third set, TWU rolled behind Alves’ five kills and Hayley Summers’ four kills. The Pioneers recorded a .273 hitting percentage, led by Summers with .571. She had four kills on seven attempts with no errors.

The Pioneers next will make their final road trip of the regular season, visiting West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Friday and Eastern New Mexico at 3 p.m. Saturday.

South Alabama d. UNT

MOBILE, Ala. — North Texas landed a big second-set punch, but South Alabama weathered the storm to knock off the Mean Green 30-28, 20-25, 25-23, 25-18.

Carnae Dillard provided UNT (18-9, 4-4 Sun Belt West) with a match-high 18 kills, but .209 hitting from the Jaguars (12-10, 5-3 East) was too much to overcome late in the match. The loss was UNT’s fourth in its last five matches.

After falling in its longest set of the season — 30-28 in the first — UNT used a late 5-1 run, including the clinching block from Courtney Windham, to win the second frame. The Mean Green hit .400 as a team in the set.

Windham, who racked up eight blocks, joined Dillard in double figures with 13 kills, and Kaci Eaton wasn’t far behind with a career-best 10 kills.

The Jaguars responded to the UNT surge with a .275 attack percentage in the third, and a 6-0 run midway through the fourth set helped to close out the match.

UNT rolled with May Allen at setter for the entire match, and the senior responded with 38 assists and 11 digs.

The Mean Green returns home next weekend to face Florida International on Friday and Florida Atlantic on Sunday.
