KINGSVILLE — Larisa Garcia tossed a complete-game shutout to lead No. 12 TWU to a 9-0 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville in five innings Saturday.
The three-game sweep to open Lone Star Conference play improved the Pioneers to 21-5.
Garcia threw a three-hitter with three walks and five strikeouts for her sixth win.
Katie Hines drove in three runs, while Kendra Sancet had two RBIs. Lizzy Kelly went 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI.
The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the first and added a run in the second. TWU added three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.
A&M-Kingsville was held hitless through the first three innings. The Javalinas managed three singles in the final two innings.
“That’s the way you want to start the conference schedule,” TWU coach Richie Bruister said. “It’s always tough to win on the road in this conference, and I am very happy with the 3-0 start. Larisa was on fire today, and our offense clicked from the first inning.”
The Pioneers will be in Laredo today to face Texas A&M International in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
UNT doubleheader rained out
North Texas’ doubleheader against Florida International was rained out Saturday. The teams will try to play a noon doubleheader today.
The Sun Belt Conference-opening series originally was scheduled to be a three-game affair.
