Track & field: Ex-Guyer, Sanger coach receives honor

Former Sanger and Guyer track coach Sean Lonergan, who is in now in his fifth season at Stephen F. Austin, was named the South Central Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week.

Lonergan helped guide SFA to the Southland Conference indoor and outdoor titles, coaching athletes who won two relays and two individual titles. He coached 19 athletes who earned all-conference honors.

Lonergan had three individuals and the 1,600-meter relay team advance to the NCAA West preliminary meet in Austin.

Cass Brown-Stewart qualified for the NCAA championship meet in the 400 meters and will join Shawn Goff, Torin Crowder and Josh Taylor in the 1,600-meter relay.

Brown-Stewart will be the first SFA athlete to compete in Eugene, Ore., at the championship meet.
