Roundup: UNT, TWU post wins in softball

Brooke Foster hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift North Texas to a 7-6 victory over Northern Iowa and the Lovelace Invitational crown Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green finished the tournament 5-0, including two wins over Northern Iowa, and has now won six straight as it heads into the Texas Shootout, which begins Thursday at Lovelace Stadium.

Jackie Miller also hit a three-run homer that gave the Mean Green (7-3) a 3-2 lead in the second inning. Kat Strunk drove in the other run that put UNT up 4-2 in the third.

Four North Texas pitchers saw action in the game beginning with Madison Thompson, who faced the first 16 Northern Iowa batters. Senior Ashley Kirk (4-1) entered the game midway through the sixth inning and retired the last five Panthers to get the win.

 

TWU 9, Chadron State 0 (5)

TWU 6, St. Edward’s 5 (8)

AUSTIN — The Pioneers closed out the St. Edward’s Softball Invitational with two more wins Sunday, defeating Chadron State in five innings before edging St. Edward’s in eight innings.

The Pioneers finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and improved to 12-3 on the year.

Against Chadron State, TWU scored in each of the first three innings for a run-rule win.

Senior Brandie Lander tossed two-hit shutout while striking out four batters. It was her fourth complete-game shutout of the season.

Senior Katie Hines went 2-for-2 with three RBIs against Chadron State, while senior Bailey Vrazel was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Junior Kendra Sancet also drove in two runs, while senior Amanda Ruiz scored three times.

Against St. Edward’s, Lander came in relief and tossed 3 2/3 innings for her 10th win of the season against no losses as TWU rallied from an early 4-0 deficit. Vrazel led the Pioneers with three RBIs, while sophomore Tealey Farquhar went 2-for-4 and scored three runs.

Lander was named the most valuable player. Hines, Sancet, Vrazel, junior Samantha Alegria and freshman Alyssa Galaz were named to the all-tournament team.

The Pioneers will make their home debut at 3 p.m. Saturday in a doubleheader against St. Edward’s.

 

Gymnastics

TWU wins quad meet

DEKALB, Ill. TWU gymnastics scored a 48.300 or better on all four events to win a quad meet at Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers final team score of 193.875 was better than the host Huskies (193.825), Iowa State Cyclones (192.675) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (191.800).

The Pioneers opened the meet on beam and scored a 48.425. TWU was led on the event by junior Stephanie Repp and freshman Carley Carter with scores of 9.725.

The Pioneers moved to floor for the second rotation and finished with a 48.300. Senior Margaret Mayfield was the Pioneers’ top performer on the event with a 9.750, while Repp scored a 9.725.

TWU continued its solid performance in the third rotation with a 48.375 vault score. Seniors Bethany Larimer and Amy Winczura led the Pioneers with marks of 9.725 each.

TWU saved its best for last as they scored a 48.775 on bars in the final rotation. Three Pioneers scored a 9.800 or better led by Larimer with a 9.850. Senior Courtney Cochefski and freshman Katie Simpson both finished with a 9.800.

The Pioneers return to action next Sunday, when they play host to Centenary and Southeast Missouri State at 2 p.m.
