SAN ANGELO — No. 4 TWU opened a three-game series at No. 24 Angelo State with an 11-3 loss in six innings Friday night. The loss snapped a 10-game win streak by the Pioneers.

TWU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top off the first inning but it’s all Angelo State after that. The Rambelles scored three runs in the second, six in the third and one in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Pioneers outhit ASU 11-10 and had runners on base in every innings. TWU left 11 runners on base and allowed four unearned runs on three errors on defense.

Senior Bailey Vrazel went 3-for-4 with run, while freshman Katy Stephens was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Brandie Lander started in the circle for the Pioneers and took the first loss of the season. She is now 13-1.

“It wasn’t our day today,” said TWU head coach Genny Stidham. “We left a lot of runners on base and did not get the key hits when we needed. Defensively we had costly errors and walked too many people. We will put this behind us and regroup for the doubleheader [today].”

The Pioneers are now 17-4 on the season and 3-1 in the Lone Star Confernce. TWU will face Angelo State in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.

UNT falls to Louisville

North Texas had its chances but couldn’t put away Louisville in any match as the Cardinals came away with a sweep on Friday.

“The turning point for us was the doubles,” UNT head coach Sujay Lama said. “We had the momentum and chances for us to close out the doubles, but you have to give Louisville credit because when it mattered, they really stepped up.”

In doubles, the Mean Green duo of Dane Joubert and Agustina Valenzuela were the first to finish as they defeated Louisville No. 3 pair 8-6. That did not hold off the Cardinals who took the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

“We were beat by a good team who played tough,” Lama said. “There are no excuses here, we just have to regroup and get ready for Denver.”

UNT plays host to Denver at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
