The No. 37 North Texas men’s golf team got off to a red-hot start at the Barona Collegiate Cup on Thursday, as four players shot in the 60s and the Mean Green was tied for third midway through the second round. Play was suspended due to darkness.
North Texas shot a season-low 16 under par in the first round and left the course at 13 under, tied for third place with No. 10 USC. No. 38 TCU was six strokes behind UNT and No. 9 Georgia Tech was 11 shots off the Mean Green pace.
San Diego State led at 23 under par, followed by No. 26 Kent State at 14 under.
North Texas was led by Ty Spinella and Rodolfo Cazaubon, who were tied for eighth place at 5 under. Spinella carded a UNT season-low 6-under 66 in the opening round. Cazaubon shot a 4-under 68 in his first round, sinking seven birdies in a stretch of 13 holes.
UNT’s Curtis Donahoe and Marco Scarola opened with rounds of 3-under 69. Donahoe was 2 under when play stopped. Scarola was 1 over with three holes to play in the second round.
The teams will finish the second round this morning before beginning the final round.
