BOWLING, GREEN, Ky. — North Texas struggled in the second round of the NCAA Bowling Green Regional on Friday, shooting an 11-over-par 299 and slipping into a tie for 10th place.
The 26th-ranked Mean Green is tied with 11th-ranked Arkansas and is 11 shots behind No. 46 Virginia Tech, which sits in fifth place. The top five teams advance to the NCAA finals.
UNT never got on track and played the opening nine holes at 8 over par. Carlos Ortiz managed to settle down on the back nine with three birdies to shoot a 1-under 71 on the day.
Ortiz is in a tie for 13th place at even par.
Ty Spinella had the most adventurous day for UNT. Spinella had eight bogeys and six birdies to shoot 2 over. He is in 25th place.
UNT freshman Jason Roets was 3 over after his first seven holes Friday but had his only birdie at the par-3 eighth and finished at 4 over. He is one shot behind Spinella and tied for 26th.
Rodolfo Cazaubon and Curtis Donahoe had the toughest rounds for UNT. Cazaubon had only three birdies to go with nine bogeys and shot a 78. Donahoe was one stroke behind Cazaubon with a second-round 79.
No. 3 UCLA leads the regional at 5 under, while No. 15 Texas A&M shot up the leaderboard and into second place with a 10-under day. No. 34 Chattanooga, No. 39 Memphis and the Hokies rounded out the top five.
