Women's basketball: UNT picks up Texas commit

Candice Adams was looking for a home after Gail Goestenkors resigned as the head coach at Texas after last season.

She found it this fall at North Texas, where she will be a key piece in the rebuilding process new head coach Mike Petersen has begun with the Mean Green.

Adams backed out of her commitment to Texas, where former UNT head coach Karen Aston took over for Goestenkors, and decided to play for the Mean Green.

“I like coach Petersen,” Adams said recently. “He has a solid foundation and a lot of experience. He has changed programs tremendously. I spoke to some players who say that he can help get you to the next level.”

Adams is just one of several players Petersen has added to the roster since taking over the program, and is arguably the most highly regarded. ESPN’s HoopGurlz website ranks Adams 99th on its list of the top 100 players in the country.

“She is a great shooter and has a great mid-range game,” Cedar Hill coach Andrea Robinson said. “She is quick, plays so hard and plays at a high level.”

Taylor Hooker, the second leading scorer last year at Tulsa, and Briesha Wynn, a former TCU standout, have transferred to UNT. BreAnna Dawkins, another former Cedar Hill standout, transferred to UNT from Wichita State before Petersen took over and will be eligible this season after sitting out the 2011-12 campaign.

Those additions helped attract Adams, who could be the crown jewel of UNT’s class.

Adams committed to Texas during her freshman season in high school.

“Gail had built a relationship throughout her high school career,” Robinson said. “Relationships with this generation of kids are important. She decided to open it back up. The biggest deciding factor was coach Petersen. She really likes him. He did a great job establishing a relationship with her.”

Adams played with Dawkins in high school and said their friendship played a small role in her decision to commit to UNT, but it was her relationship with the Mean Green’s new head coach and her confidence in where he will take the program that were the key factors.

“I definitely feel good about the direction of the program,” Adams said. “Coach Petersen gave me a good vibe, and I have played with some of the players there.”
