Soccer: UNT’s home streak snapped

For the first time in nearly two years, North Texas lost a game at home, dropping a 1-0 decision Sunday to the TCU Horned Frogs.

UNT’s last loss at the Mean Green Soccer Complex occurred Sept. 17, 2010, in a 3-2 overtime loss to SMU. UNT then went on a 17-game unbeaten streak.

UNT senior forward Michelle Young had three shots against TCU, including one that ricocheted off the near post in the 20th minute.

Young’s near goal turned out to be the best opportunity the Mean Green had to score in the first half, despite outshooting the Horned Frogs 5-4 in the first 45 minutes.

The Horned Frogs (5-3-1) scored the game’s only goal in the 32nd minute, when Kelly Johnson headed one past goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine. Johnson was able to leap high enough for a pass from teammate Brittany Slyman and put the Horned Frogs ahead.

UNT (5-3-1) went into halftime trailing at home for the first time since Nov. 6, 2008, against Western Kentucky. The Mean Green lost that game 1-0.

Junior defender Alli Guderian had the best chance in the second half to tie the game, but her shot in the 75th minute was punched away by TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold.

UNT has lost three straight games for the first time since last September, when it also lost the last three games before Sun Belt Conference play. The Mean Green ended up capturing the SBC title last season.

UNT begins conference play at 7 p.m. Friday at Louisiana-Lafayette.
