LAFAYETTE, La. — North Texas midfielder Carly McDowell scored two goals in a 2-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday to open Sun Belt Conference play.
McDowell opened the scoring on a pass from Alli Guderian in the 17th minute, which turned out to be the only goal of the first half. North Texas outshot ULL 6-0 in the first 45 minutes.
Just 1:01 into the second half, McDowell scored her second goal of the game and third of the season past Ragin’ Cajuns goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield to put the Mean Green up 2-0. Freshman Karla Pineda was credited with her third assist of the season.
“It always feels good to be the one to put the goals away, but it was a team effort,” McDowell said.
UNT goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine picked up her fourth shutout and sixth win of the season after making two saves. Kerestine helped keep the Cajuns from scoring on the Mean Green for the fourth straight season.
The last goal ULL scored against UNT was in a 3-1 loss to the Mean Green on Sept. 26, 2008.
North Texas (6-3-1) snapped a four-game winless streak.
