Men’s basketball: UNT reveals Benford contract

North Texas head coach Tony Benford on Monday disputed the way Arkansas State head coach John Brady characterized a confrontation between the two and game officials during the Red Wolves’ 75-66 overtime win over the Mean Green on Saturday.

New North Texas coach Tony Benford signed a five-year contract with the school that will pay in excess of $350,000 in base salary and guaranteed incentives annually.

Late last week, the UNT athletic department released the full contract, which was signed in the summer.

The former Marquette assistant coach is eight games into his first season at UNT, which will face St. Louis on Wednesday. The Mean Green fell to 3-5 after dropping its first Sun Belt Conference game to Louisiana-Lafayette at home on Saturday.

Benford’s contract starts with a base salary of $320,000 and escalates each season until reaching $393,593 in the last year of the contract, which ends April 30, 2017.

Benford also receives a $7,200 car allowance and the use of a university courtesy car. The contract includes a $35,000 radio stipend.

There are several other incentives written into the contract, including $10,000 retention bonuses to be paid Sept. 1 in 2015 and 2016.

Benford will receive a $5,000 bonus if UNT wins 20 games in any season. The payment jumps to $10,000 if the Mean Green wins 25 games.

Benford has a $10,000 bonus in his contract if he is named Coach of the Year in UNT’s conference. The Mean Green is playing its final season in the Sun Belt this year before jumping to Conference USA.

There is a $10,000 bonus written into the deal if UNT wins a regular-season conference title and a $25,000 bonus if UNT wins a postseason conference tournament and earns an automatic NCAA bid.

There are bonuses in the contract if UNT advances in each round of the NCAA tournament. Benford also will receive a $10,000 bonus if UNT sells 3,000 season tickets and $10,000 for each additional 1,000 tickets.

If UNT were to terminate Benford’s contract without cause, it would be required to pay him his monthly base salary multiplied by the number of months remaining on the contract. There is a mitigation clause in the deal that would reduce UNT’s financial obligation by an amount equal to the salary of any new job Benford would take after leaving the school.

If Benford elects to leave UNT in the first three years of his contract, he would be required to pay the school an amount equal to his annual base salary at that time. If Benford leaves in the fourth year of his contract, he would have to pay UNT $275,000.
