MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — North Texas came up short in the final seconds against Sun Belt Conference rival Middle Tennessee on Thursday and lost 66-64.

“Every game has been like this. I have seen nine games identical to this one,” UNT coach Mike Petersen said. “We just need to find that one extra basket or that one less defensive mistake, and I think we will be OK.”

Following a physical first half that included a fierce battle on the boards, North Texas (2-9, 1-1 Sun Belt) entered the second half leading by two. The game remained a back-and-forth contest and featured 20 lead changes.

In the final 15 seconds, with the Mean Green up 64-63, Middle Tennessee’s Icelyn Elie knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Blue Raiders (7-5, 2-1) the winning margin.

After a final timeout, North Texas was unable to answer.

UNT spread the wealth, as freshmen Loryn Goodwin and Alexis Hyder scored 12 and 13 points, respectively. Junior point guard Laura McCoy also scored 12 points after failing to score in the previous two games.

North Texas now travels to Bowling Green, Ky., to face the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at 4 p.m. Saturday. The men’s game will follow at 7 p.m.
