Women’s basketball: UNT looks to roll on

Not long ago, North Texas coach Mike Petersen was talking about how all the close, tough games the Mean Green played early in the season would pay off at some point.

The time appears to be now.

UNT has won five in a row heading into a game today at Florida Atlantic, which knocked the Mean Green out of the Sun Belt Conference tournament last season in a 56-55 decision.

A win would give UNT its longest winning streak since the 2001-02 season and keep the Mean Green atop the Sun Belt’s West Division. UNT (7-10, 6-2 SBC) has a one-game lead over Arkansas State, which is 5-3 in league play, after beating Florida International on Thursday.

Alexis Hyder hit a layup and a pair of free throws to help give UNT a 70-68 win over the Golden Panthers after teammate Braylah Blakely tied the game at 66 with a layup.

“You can’t go on winning streaks without winning road games, and we have won two tough road games against two good teams,” Petersen said after UNT’s win over FIU. “That team beat Iowa and went on the road and beat Middle [Tennessee]. That is a good team.”

UNT also beat Arkansas-Little Rock on the road earlier this month. That win was part of a dramatic turnaround for the Mean Green, which was 2-10 before going on its recent tear.

Hyder is scoring 13.4 points per game to lead four UNT players averaging in double figures.

Chenise Miller is averaging 14.4 points for FAU (9-7, 6-2).
