The North Texas tennis team ran its winning streak to three over the weekend while keeping its doubles record spotless.
UNT, which is ranked 54th, beat Old Dominion 6-1 on Saturday before sweeping Lamar 7-0 on Sunday.
UNT won the doubles point in both matches and has now picked up the point in each of its four matches this season, despite playing No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 41 Minnesota in College Station.
“It was a solid weekend,” UNT coach Sujay Lama said. “It was something we expected. There were some situations where the matches were tight. We lifted our game at those times.”
That was especially true in doubles.
UNT’s No. 2 team of Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova and No. 3 team of Ilona Serchenko and Dane Joubert both won their doubles matches against ODU by 8-1 scores.
“We are playing great doubles and are playing at a high level,” Lama said. “We have played four matches and won the doubles point every time, including against Texas A&M. By the end of the year, they will be a top-four team nationally. That gave us a lot of confidence.”
UNT will continue its season with a pair of matches against Sun Belt Conference opponents this weekend in Mobile, Ala., where the Mean Green will face Florida International on Saturday and South Alabama on Sunday.
Hyder named Sun Belt Player of the Week
Alexis Hyder was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week on Monday after leading UNT to a pair of wins.
Hyder scored 23 points and added nine rebounds in a 64-62 win over Arkansas State on Sunday in a key Sun Belt West Division game.
UNT (9-13, 8-5 SBC) pulled to within a game of ASU (12-10, 9-4) in the division standings.
Hyder scored 14 points and added 16 rebounds in UNT’s 64-46 win over Louisiana-Lafayette in its first game of the week.
The 16 rebounds Hyder grabbed were the most for a UNT freshman since 2005.
Hyder is averaging 13.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game heading into a game at home against Western Kentucky on Thursday.
UNT picked to finish fifth
UNT was picked to finish fifth in the Sun Belt’s preseason coaches poll that was released Monday.
ULL, the five-time defending conference champion, was a unanimous pick to win the conference title.
UNT did not have a player among the 17 who were named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt team.
