SAN MARCOS — Ashley Kirk and Lauren Poole combined for a four-hit shutout as North Texas beat Texas State 1-0 on Thursday in the first game of the Texas Shootout.
Kirk (2-3) pitched six innings and allowed three hits. She struck out six and walked six. The junior pitched out of jams in the second, third and fourth innings.
Poole picked up her first career save. She relieved Kirk in the seventh and forced two groundouts and a fly ball.
Jordan Terry recorded the first hit for the Mean Green to lead off the third. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Schoblocher and moved to third on a Jackie Miller groundout. Lesley Hirsch drove in Terry with an infield single.
The Mean Green loaded the bases in the fourth but couldn’t score.
The Bobcats (2-8) stranded 14 runners. Each team posted just four hits.
North Texas (5-7) will face Texas Tech at 5 p.m. today in the tournament.
