Softball: Seventh-inning run beats North Texas

Florida Atlantic scored in the bottom of the seventh to record a 3-2 victory Tuesday over North Texas in the opener of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Mean Green falls to 16-14 and 4-4 in the conference, while FAU improves to 24-18 and 7-3.

Tied 2-2 in the seventh, FAU’s Shelby Knox drew a one-out walk. Then with two outs, she stole second and scored when the catcher’s throw went into the outfield and misplayed.

Ashley Kirk (7-5) took the loss for the Mean Green, allowing all three runs on three hits, She had six strikeouts but gave up five walks.

Dani Hoff gave UNT a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double, scoring Jordan Terry from first. It was Hoff’s team-leading ninth double of the season.

Madison Tierney knocked in Karly Williams with a single in the second inning that gave the Mean Green’s a 2-1 lead.

The Mean Green returns to action with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. today against FAU.
