AUSTIN — Carlos Ortiz shot Sunday’s lowest round and Curtis Donahoe had a season-best finish to lead the No. 36 North Texas men on the final day of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate.
Ortiz shot a 3-under 68 and Donahoe finished in sixth place as UNT beat two top-25 teams in finishing seventh overall.
Ortiz finished in a tie for seventh after playing his best round of the season. He posted four birdies and one bogey on the day. He finished at 1-under 212 for the tournament.
Donahoe was one shot better with a 2-under par 211. He posted a final round of 1 over that featured five birdies.
Rodolfo Cazaubon, Gonzalo Rubio and Jason Roets didn’t fare as well as their teammates in the third round. Cazaubon and Rubio each shot 79 while Roets shot an 81. Marco Scarola, playing as an individual, fired a 72 and finished tied for 31st.
No. 6 Texas captured the team title with a final round of 2 over par. UNT was 14 over on the day and finished in front of No. 25 Houston, No. 49 Baylor, No. 20 Kent State and No. 29 UNLV.
North Texas next looks toward defending its Sun Belt Conference title April 22-24 in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
