ARLINGTON — Nina Villanueva hit a two-run homer to give Texas-Arlington a 2-1 victory over North Texas on Wednesday night at Allan Saxe Field.
The Mavs (19-24) defeated the Mean Green for the first time since 2008 and tied the season series at 1 game apiece. The teams will meet again Tuesday at Lovelace Stadium.
North Texas (22-22) outhit the Mavs 5-2 but left nine runners stranded on base. The Mean Green had an opportunity in the first inning to score but left the bases loaded.
Jackie Miller put UNT ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth with a solo home run. It was her fifth of the season and her third in the last five games.
UTA led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, and Villanueva put UTA on top with her first career home run.
Teri Lyles picked up the win. She relieved Callie Collins after she gave up the homer, and Lyles shut down the Mean Green. She gave up just two hits in four innings of work.
Ashley Kirk (10-8) took the loss despite striking out nine batters. She gave up two runs and two hits in six innings of work.
North Texas returns to action this weekend when it hosts Louisiana-Monroe for a three-game series.
