UNT roundup: UNT tennis advances to semis; Wilson sets school track mark

NORFOLK, Va. — Junior Franziska Sprinkmeyer defeated Kathrin Waidner 6-1, 6-4 to clinch North Texas’ 4-0 victory over Southern Miss and a spot in the semifinals of the Conference USA tournament.

The third-seeded Mean Green will take on No. 2 seed Rice at 11 a.m. today.

“We are excited to play in the semis against a formidable opponent,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “It’s a tremendous challenge but a great opportunity for us.”

Junior Kseniya Bardabush, playing in the No. 1 slot, led North Texas to its first point of the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Carolin Drescher, while sophomore Agustina Valenzuela made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 4 spot.

Freshman Anastasiya Shestakova captured the third match point at the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win over Mahitha Dadireddy.

Wilson sets school record

WALNUT, Calif. — North Texas started the 56th annual Mount SAC Relays with Charlotte Wilson setting the school record in the 10,000 meters.

Wilson placed 14th in the Silver Elite finals with a time of 35 minutes, 21.10 seconds, breaking the school record by 59 seconds.

Junior Magdalena Escobar ran in the B final of the women’s 3,000 steeplechase and placed 17th with a time of 11:12.45.

In the men’s 3,000 steeplechase, James Coleman led the way for the Mean Green, finishing 15th in the A final in a time of 9:11.22. Alejandro Valencia finished 18th in 9:14.11.

The Mount SAC Relays will continue today, beginning at noon.
