The North Texas women will compete in its first Conference USA championship beginning today at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.

UNT enters the three-day, 54-hole event seeded eighth in the 13-team field that will compete on the par 72, 6,145-yard course. Seedings are based on the Golfstat team rankings.

The winner of the team title will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA regionals.

UNT enters the tournament off a 16th-place finish in a field of 16 teams at the SMU Invitational. Eji Kwon finished in a tie for 54th place and was UNT’s top finisher at the event that was cut to 36 holes by inclement weather.

UNT finished eighth in its final Sun Belt Conference championship last season.

Tulane is ranked No. 29 nationally by Golfweek and enters the tournament as the favorite. The Green Waves has four golfers who finished among the top eight in the individual standings returning from its team that won last season’s C-USA title.

Nico Engstroem Skaug of East Carolina won the individual title a year ago and is back to defend her title. ECU is ranked No. 43 by Golfweek, while Texas-San Antonio is ranked No. 45.
