FIU sweeps Mean Green despite big day by Elder

MIAMI -- For the second straight day, North Texas couldn't get the hit it needed with runners in scoring position, while Florida International had one big hit to secure a 1-0 victory Sunday.

Senior Jessica Elder (3-4) was dealt the loss despite having one of her best outings of the season, limiting FIU to one run and five hits across six strong innings.

"We got a great pitching performance from Jessica," UNT coach Tracey Kee said. "She needed some confidence, and for her to throw the game she did was a step in the right direction."

Elder's lone hiccup was in the fourth inning when Stephanie Texeira broke up her no-hitter with an inside-the-park home run that bounced off the wall in right-center.

The Mean Green (14-13, 3-3 Conference USA) were limited to three hits by FIU's Abby Summers (8-0), while Shannon Saile picked up her second save.

North Texas put the leadoff hitter on base in five of the seven innings but couldn't string together a rally to back Elder's performance in the circle.

"Offensively we did not show up this weekend," Kee said. "When you can't execute in a tight ballgame, you're not going to come out on top."

Elder was able to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth by getting pinch hitter Sammi Green to fly out to left, keeping it a one-run game.

The Mean Green put a runner in scoring position with one out in the sixth but were unable to pull even with FIU (26-6, 3-0), as Summers worked out of the jam.

In the seventh, the Mean Green had runners on first and second with no outs, but freshman Camille Grahmann popped out to the pitcher and classmate Nicole Ochotnicki grounded into a double play to end the game.

FIU swept the weekend series, which began with a Saturday doubleheader.

"We have four days of practice before UTSA, and we'll spend a couple of those working on fundamentals before really starting to prepare for UTSA," Kee said.

North Texas will host Texas-San Antonio for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
