TWU’s Courtney Cochefski has been awarded the inaugural Ruth E. “Betsy” Tandy Scholarship in Intercollegiate Athletics.
Cochefski, a communication sciences sophomore with a 3.859 grade-point average, captured the 2012 USA Gymnastics national championship on uneven bars. She posted a career-high 9.850 to win the event title and was named a first-team All-American. Cochefski qualified for the NCAA regionals on bars and tied for eighth with a 9.825.
The scholarship was established in honor of Betsy Tandy, who served TWU in many capacities. She coached the TWU tennis and bowling teams from 1968 to 1971 and then served as supervisor for student teachers in the health department until 1980, later teaching in the department until her retirement in 1995.
Tandy coordinated officials for all sports at TWU in the 1970s and for the state basketball tournament in 1972. She was on the national rules committee for basketball. She died in 2009 at the age of 81.
