TWU announced a challenging 2012 volleyball schedule Tuesday, as the Pioneers open the season with two tough tournaments before jumping right into Lone Star Conference action — with 10 of the first 14 conference matches on the road.
“Our nonconference games should be very challenging, and the conference schedule is always tough,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “Every game we play will push us to get better for the postseason, and I am looking forward to another positive season.”
TWU opens the season at home Aug. 31 with its annual Holiday Inn Express & Suites Classic. TWU will face East Central (Okla.) and Arkansas Monticello on the first day and then take on New Mexico Highlands and Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on Sept. 1.
“Our annual tournament is one of the best in the country,” Barberee said.“We will have teams from Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Puerto Rico, and it should be very challenging.”
The Pioneers will then head to Grand Junction, Colo., to play in the Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic hosted by Colorado Mesa on Sept. 7-8. TWU will play Fort Hays State, Western State College, Grand Canyon and Colorado Mesa.
Then it is right into conference play. The Pioneers will close out the regular season with seven consecutive home games at Kitty Magee Arena.
The LSC tournament is scheduled for Nov. 15-17 at the home of the regular-season champion.
