TWU senior Viktorija Jablonska and junior Marcela Alves combined for 41 kills Friday to lead the Pioneers to a pair of three-set wins over East Central and Arkansas-Monticello in the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Classic.
The Pioneers opened the season with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-16 victory over ECU behind Jablonska’s match-high 12 kills. Alves made her TWU debut with 11 kills while junior Courtnee Davis recorded a match-high 19 digs in her first TWU appearance. Kayla Rivero had 28 assists and Morgan Wilson posted 10 digs.
The Pioneers then cruised to a 25-14, 25-20, 25-15 win over Arkansas-Monticello while posting a .277 hitting percentage. All 15 players on the roster appeared in the match, led by Jablonska and Alves with nine kills apiece. Sophomore Hanna Marshall and Rivero had 19 and 15 assists, respectively.
“It’s a good start to the season compared to last year when we opened 0-5,” TWU coach Shelly Barberee said. “Viktorija picked up where she left off last year and Marcela will be big for us this season at the net.”
Today, the Pioneers will face New Mexico Highlands at 11:30 a.m. and wrap up tournament play with Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras at 4:30 p.m.
