After surrendering the game-tying goal nearly three minutes after taking a 1-0 lead, the TWU Pioneers responded with an opportunistic goal by freshman Sara Alvarez in the 80th minute as they defeated the Angelo State Rambelles 2-1 on Sunday at TWU Soccer Field.
“We have a lot of freshman on the field, which is great because we are winning with young players,” TWU head coach Fleur Benatar said. “That’s the reason Sara is on the field is because she knows where the ball is supposed to go. She has good size, good instincts and she made the right decision.”
Angelo State goalkeeper Danielle Edwards came out to clear a ball put into the box, but cleared right to Alverez, who looped a shot over Edwards for what proved to be the game-winner.
“It was kind of a freak accident, I guess,” Alvarez said. “The goalie was out, that’s the first thing I was thinking. It feels great. We were tied, so it felt like the game-breaker, kind of. We didn’t want to get out of here with a tie.”
The win snapped Angelo State’s three-game winning streak, while the Pioneers improved a 4-3-1 and 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
Junior Mariel Parra scored her first college goal for TWU in the 63rd minute, beating her defender to a jump ball and heading the shot downward and inside the left post.
The Rambelles responded with a goal off a corner kick as the ball landed in a mass of bodies in front of the goal and freshman Teegan Courtney punched it in to tie the game at 1-1.
“We need to tighten up our defense on our corners, and we need to be better after we score goals,” Benatar said.
“That has happened to us several times and it is a bit of a problem. On Friday, [Incarnate Word] scored a minute and 15 seconds after we scored, so that’s an issue.”
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, with sophomore TWU goalkeeper Lindsey Sisco making the only save for either team.
“She is extremely agile and athletic for her size and she made a difference,” Benatar said of Sisco. “She was keeping us in the game, and she had at least two saves that were game-saving saves.”
