TWU volleyball coach Shelly Barberee announced Tuesday the signing of Flint’s Mallory Kuechle and Brownsboro’s Hillary Shaffer to national letters of intent to join the Pioneers in the fall of 2013.
“They are great athletes and will add a lot to our team both on the court and in the classroom,” Barberee said.
Kuechle, a 5-11 outside hitter, was a four-year starter at Tyler Robert E. Lee and a two-time selection to the all-district first team. Kuechle was named to the All-East Texas second team in 2010 and the first team in 2011. She was a four-time Academic All-District 11-5A selection.
“Mallory is a very physical player with a great amount of ball control,” Barberee said. “She has the ability to be an all-around player very early in her career.”
Shaffer, a 6-0 middle blocker, will join the Pioneers after playing one year at Panola College. She was second on the team in kills (227) and blocks (97) in 2012.
Shaffer was a four-time all-district selection at Brownsboro. She was named district MVP in 2010 and 2011. The four-time academic all-district selection is a member of the National Honor Society.
“Hillary’s versatility will be a huge advantage for our team,” Barberee said. “She is dynamic in the middle and puts up a huge block on the right side.”
