SAN ANTONIO — TWU earned a split on the second day of the St. Mary’s Classic on Saturday, beating East Central 4-3 before falling 5-1 to Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Against ECU, the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by sophomore Kathryn Williams.
The Lady Tigers from Ada, Okla., took the lead in the third on a three-run homer.
TWU junior Katie Hines tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single and came around to score the game-winning run on a single by Kendra Sancet.
TWU senior Jordan Readicker went 3 for 4, while Hines, Sancet and Bailey Vrazel had two hits apiece.
Brandi Lander started in the circle and tossed four innings for her second win of the season. Larisa Garcia pitched two innings and picked up her ninth career save.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers struggled to produce offense. TWU managed only four hits and committed three errors.
After four scoreless innings, freshman Ashley Maddox put TWU on top with a leadoff home run.
The Savage Storm responded in the bottom of the sixth by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Three of the five runs were unearned after the Pioneers committed two errors.
TWU did not go down quietly, loading the basses in the seventh with one out, but two fly balls to center field ended the game.
Maddox went 3 for 3, while Hines tossed a complete game.
The Pioneers (2-2) will wrap up Classic play today with a 9:30 a.m. game against Lubbock Christian, which is beginning a three-year transition period from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.
