SAN ANTONIO — TWU fell to Incarnate Word 58-40 on Wednesday evening at the McDermott Center.

TWU (6-13, 4-9 Lone Star) was led by Rebekah Cluley’s nine points. Guards Tabbatha Thurmond and Toree Mason each added six points.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, as they made just six field goals apiece. TWU shot 24.0 percent from the floor while the Cardinals hit just 22.2 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes.

Incarnate Word outscored the Pioneers 8-6 from the free throw line and led 21-18 at halftime.

The Cardinals opened the second half on a 19-2 run and built a 20-point lead with 13:40 remaining. TWU rallied to cut the deficit to 41-32 with 8:26 left, but Incarnate Word responded and soon pushed its lead back to 17 points.

“In the first half, we did a good job defensively but missed a lot of free throws,” TWU coach Beth Jillson said. “We didn’t have a good second half, with 14 turnovers. We dug ourselves a hole in the second but rallied to cut the deficit to nine. They hit a 3 to stop our run, and we kind of got deflated by that.”

The Pioneers will return to action when they play host to Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kitty Magee Arena.
