Softball: Pioneers take two victories with shutouts

AUSTIN — Larisa Garcia and Brandie Lander pitched complete-game shutouts to help No. 14 TWU win two games Sunday at the St. Edward’s tournament. The Pioneers defeated Texas A&M International 7-0 and St. Edward’s 6-0.

Lander started against the Dustdevils and struck out six for her sixth win. She allowed six hits while walking two.

TWU’s Katie Hines hit a two-run homer in the top of the first — her team-leading fifth. 

In the third, Jordan Readicker, Haley Colwell and Sarah Wittenburgh had RBI singles. In the fourth, Kendra Sancet hit an RBI single.

Against St. Edward’s, the Pioneers got on the board with three runs in the top of the fifth. Amanda Ruiz hit a sacrifice fly. Lizzy Kelly followed with a two-run double to right-center.

Kelly drove in her third run of the game with a bunt. Hines brought her home with a double.

Garcia lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh. She allowed a bloop single on a 2-2 count. Garcia struck out one and picked up her third win.

The Pioneers will host Oklahoma Christian for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
