Softball: Midwestern State nips TWU in extra innings

WICHITA FALLS — Seventh-ranked TWU fell to Midwestern State 4-3 in eight innings Friday.

The Pioneers (33-8, 11-2 Lone Star) fell behind in the bottom of the first when Kelley Schaefer hit a two-out RBI single. TWU went scoreless through the first four innings before Katie Hines put the Pioneers on top with three-run home run — her 19th of the year.

The Mustangs got a home run from Katelyn Vinson in the sixth and an RBI single from Schaefer in the seventh. The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the eighth with one out to capture the win.

Hines went 4-for-4 while Amanda Ruiz was 4-for-5. Larisa Garcia started in the circle and tossed six innings, allowing two runs. Brandie Lander pitched 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.

The teams will play a noon doubleheader today.
