SAN ANTONIO — TWU swept a doubleheader at Incarnate Word on Friday, winning 3-1 and 6-3 at Cardinals Field.

The No. 10 Pioneers (39-11, 17-5 Lone Star) broke three single-season team records. TWU has scored 343 runs this season to break last year’s record of 338. The Pioneers’ 319 RBIs passed last season’s mark of 312. TWU hit six doubles Friday and has 91 on the season, breaking the record of 88 set by the 2002 team.

In game one, the Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Amanda Ruiz doubled to right-center with one out and scored on a two-out single by Katie Hines. TWU added a run in the third to make it 2-0. Ruiz walked with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lizzy Kelly and scored on Hines’ double to right-center.

Incarnate Word cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth when Monica Acuna scored on Whitney Waltrip’s sacrifice fly.

Jordan Readicker added an insurance run for the Pioneers in the sixth with her 16th home run of the season.

TWU senior Larisa Garcia started in the circle and tossed a complete game for her 11th win of the season. She allowed three this and one run while striking out three batters.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead.

TWU exploded for five runs in the top of the third, highlighted by Kendra Sancet’s grand slam. Ruiz drove in the Pioneers’ first run of the inning before Sancet’s 10th home run of the season.

Incarnate Word got one run in the third on a leadoff walk and a double to make it 5-3.

The Pioneers answered with a run in the fourth. Haley Colwell led off with a double to right-center and scored on Ruiz’s single to left.

Junior Brandie Lander tossed five shutout innings of relief to pick up her 18th win. She allowed two hits while striking out four batters.

“That’s the best I have seen our team play all year and a great start to the weekend,” TWU coach Richie Bruister said. “We played great defense, pitched well and got the timely hits. Larisa and Brandie pitched great while the offense gave them some run support with big hits. Katie and Jordan had the key hits in the first game and Kendra had the big hit in the second. Our middle of the lineup really stepped up.”

The teams will play a single game today to wrap-up the three-game series. The noon contest will be TWU’s final road game of the regular season.
