The TWU volleyball team, coming off of one of its most successful seasons, has been picked to finish third in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll announced Tuesday.
West Texas A&M is a slight favorite to capture the LSC title, while Angelo State is a close second, followed by TWU and Tarleton State.
The poll reflects the opinions of LSC head coachs, sports information directors and media representatives.
West Texas A&M, the defending Lone Star Conference tournament champion, earned 12 first-place votes on the 25 ballots for a total of 211 points.
Angelo State, the LSC regular-season champion in 2012, had 10 first-place votes for a total of 208 points.
TWU, which finished with a 23-8 record and was 15-5 in league play, had three first-place votes and 161 points.
The Pioneers, who earned a conference tournament berth for the 10th consecutive year in 2012, return nine letter winners and six of seven starters.
TWU will be led by seniors Chloe’ Tate, Marcela Alves and Josie Santos. Tate, a Ryan graduate, was a first-team all-conference slection in 2012 while Alves was named to the second team and Santos received honorable mention.
TWU opens its season Sept. 6 in Austin against Adams State in the Hilltopper/Rattler Classic.
The Pioneers’ first home appearance will be Sept. 17 against Texas A&M-Commerce.
