SAN ANGELO — Fourth-ranked TWU lost both games of the doubleheader on Saturday to No. 24 Angelo State — 15-9 and 9-6.
The losses drop the Pioneers to 17-6 and 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
In the opener, TWU fell behind 10-2 before scoring two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to make it 10-8. The Rambelles put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman Katy Stephens and senior Katie Hines both homered in the game. Junior Kendra Sancet and freshman Alyssa Galaz recorded two hits each.
In the second game, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but ASU scored the next nine runs for the win. TWU scored its sixth run in the top of the seventh.
Senior Amanda Ruiz went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Galaz, Hines and sophomore Tealey Farquhar all finished with multiple hits.
“Offensively we played much better today, but our pitching struggled the entire series,” TWU head coach Genny Stidham said. “Angelo State is a good team, and they got the key hits with runners on base. We will practice hard [this] week and get ready for the Lone Star Conference Showcase next weekend.”
The Pioneers will travel to Wichita Falls to play in the LSC Showcase, which begins Thursday. TWU will face six of the seven conference members including Angelo State, Cameron, Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M.
