TWU dropped a home doubleheader to No. 7 St. Mary’s on Tuesday. The No. 18 Pioneers lost 10-7 before dropping an 8-0 decision in five innings.
In the first game, the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. TWU sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times on one hit, three walks, an error and a hit batter.
St. Mary’s cut its deficit to three with a two-run home run in the top of the second.
TWU’s Katie Hines led off the third with a solo home run to make it 6-2, and Alyssa Galaz made it 7-2 in the fourth with an RBI double.
The Rattlers scored a run in the fifth before scoring seven in the sixth to capture the win.
After a scoreless first inning in the nightcap, St. Mary’s had another big inning, scoring seven runs on six hits and two walks. The Rattlers added a run in the fifth for the run-rule victory.
The Pioneers struggled on offense as they had just three singles.
“We let one get away in the first game,” TWU coach Genny Stidham said. “Our pitchers had one bad inning in each game, and that was the difference. Offensively we drew some walks and got the clutch hits to score seven runs in the first game but struggled in the second game.”
The Pioneers next will visit Eastern New Mexico. Doubleheaders are set for 2 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
