TWU second at MIC meet

TWU's Schyler Jones competes on balance beam Saturday night during a meet against LSU, Oregon State and New Hampshire at Kitty Magee Arena. The Pioneers finished fourth in the meet.

CHICAGO -- TWU placed second at the Midwest Independent Conference meet Saturday with an overall score of 194.000. Lindenwood took the title with an 194.675.

Lindenwood won the championship for the third straight year. The Pioneers defeated Illinois State (193.575), Illinois-Chicago (192.750), Southeast Missouri State (192.500) and Centenary (190.350).

TWU began the meet on uneven bars with Schyler Jones starting with a 9.525. Taylor Vincent followed with an 8.275, and Bria Northrop posted a 9.800. Alyssa Kelly made her season debut with a 9.475, Katie Simson swung to a 9.675 and Jenna Cashmore anchored with a 9.300. The 47.775 total placed the Pioneers in a competitive position on the leaderboard.

Balance beam was a strong event for the Pioneers, with MIC coach of the year Lisa Bowerman leading her crew to a 48.325. Simpson scored a 9.650, Mallory Moredock brought in a 9.775 and Erin Alderman registered a 9.625. Northrop was steady with a 9.600, Vincent stayed strong with her 9.675 and Jones anchored with an 8.075.

On floor exercise, Kaitlyn Holley competed for the first time this season and scored a 9.725. Simpson tumbled to a 9.750, and Moredock set a career high with a 9.875. Alderman was a powerhouse with a 9.850, Jones scored 9.750 and Northrop anchored with a 9.850. After the third-rotation 49.075, TWU was in second place.

Vault was the final rotation, with Northrop leading off and scoring 9.55. Alderman flew high with a 9.725 and Brandi Lazarus scored a 9.700. Moredock matched her career high set last meet with a 9.775. Simpson kept up the energy with her 9.775, and Jones wrapped up competition for the Pioneers with a 9.850. TWU vaulted to a rotation score of 48.825.

Jones, Northrop, Moredock, Alderman and Simpson earned all-conference honors for their performances.

The top six teams in each region will compete in NCAA regionals April 1. As of Monday, TWU was 10th in the South Central Region.
