Although Denton didn’t earn any medals at the Class 4A state meet Saturday, coach Chris Cullen was happy with the Broncos’ performance in the finals.

“We finished with a fourth, a fifth, a sixth and an eighth,” Cullen said. “I’m pretty happy with that.”

Denton junior DJ Lang narrowly missed making the podium in the boys 100-yard freestyle, finishing in fourth place with a time of 46.65, just six-hundredths of a second behind the third-place swimmer.

In the 200 freestyle, Lang finished fifth with a time of 1:42.71.

“I’m happy with my performance,” Lang said. “It was really close in the 200 free, but there’s always next year. I’ll be better prepared then.”

While Lang didn’t earn a medal, he still turned in record-breaking times.

“DJ did really well,” Cullen said. “Those [times] are school records. We’re very excited and proud of him.”

Anthony Milbitz matched his time from Friday’s preliminaries in the 100 backstroke final, finishing in sixth place with a 53.80.

“That says a lot about him,” Cullen said. “He’s consistent.”

It was the senior’s last meet for Denton.

“He’s been a good leader both in and out of the water,” Cullen said. “I’m very pleased with Anthony.”

Milbitz also swam in the consolation final of the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:05.14.

Competing in one of the last events of the day was senior Cody Knapp, who finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke final with a time of 1:01.22.

“I thought he went out a little too fast and just wasn’t able to bring it home,” Cullen said. “But he did a good job and had a pretty good season.”

Denton freshman Elise Page tied for third in the consolation final of the girls 100 freestyle, turning in a 54.63.

The girls 200 medley relay team also competed in the consolation final, finishing fourth. Bri Broussard, Kayla McGill, Rachael Crews and Page turned in a time of 1:54.81.

In the boys 200 medley relay, Knapp, Milbitz and sophomores Andy and Kevin Ye finished fourth in the consolation final with a time of 1:42.00.
