Denton, Lake Dallas, Guyer start Monday

While many area football teams began practice Monday, the remaining three schools will get fall practice underway this week.

Denton, Guyer and Lake Dallas will start practice Monday after participating in spring football in April.

UIL rules give Class 4A and 5A schools the choice to hold spring football workouts. If they do, they get one less week of preparation prior to school starting.

Ryan coach Joey Florence has long been against spring ball and chooses to take the extra week of work leading up to the season, as the Raiders began practice Monday.

Guyer will be looking to repeat as Class 4A Division I state champion and should enter the season as a favorite to win the title once again behind quarterback Jerrod Heard, who has committed to Texas.

Heard accounted for all seven of Guyer’s touchdowns in December’s state championship victory over Georgetown and was named the game’s Offensive Most Valuable Player.

Lake Dallas finished the 2012 season with a 7-5 record and a playoff win over Saginaw Boswell before falling to Waco in the area round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs.

The Falcons have two capable quarterbacks ready to step in for the departed Marshall Dominy, including the athletic Josh Jackson.

Denton finished the season with a 3-7 mark under new head coach Kevin Atkinson. The longtime Keller coach will look for better results in his second season with the Broncos and has a returning quarterback capable of running his pass-heavy offense in senior Cy Ward.
