Water polo: Denton boys place second at regional

The Denton boys competed this weekend in the TISCA North Region tournament, where they took second place, with Thomas Hyvarinen earning MVP honors and Michael Adami earning a spot on the all-tournament first team.

The Bronocos opened tournament play with a 16-8 victory over Guyer. Hyvarinen led the offense with six goals, two assists and three steals, followed by Adami with four goals and a steal.

Ben Naugle added two goals, two assists and five steals for the Broncos, while Brad Broussard added two goals and three assists. Josh Rowell also scored a goal, while goalkeeper Gus Cocchiarella had 10 saves.

In the semifinals against Rockwall, Hyvarinen scored five goals to lead the Broncos to a 9-8 win. Adami had a goal and two steals, while Naugle added a goal and a steal. Cocchiarella made 15 saves in net.

In the final against Dallas St. Mark’s, Denton fell short in a 16-3 loss. Hyvarinen and Adami were the only Broncos to score.

Naugle was selected to the second team and Cocchiarella earned honorable mention.

The Broncos will advance to state as a No. 2 seed.

Denton’s girls also advanced to the state tournament by placing fourth in the North Region tournament, finishing 3-2.

The Lady Broncos opened the tournament with a 14-3 win over Grand Prairie before defeating Ryan 8-5.

Denton then lost to Southlake Carroll to fall into the losers bracket, where it defeated Guyer 10-6.

The Lady Broncos were then eliminated from tournament play with an 8-7 overtime loss to Flower Mound.
