The Denton Broncos had trouble getting on the scoreboard Friday night, scoring all 14 of their points in the second quarter of their 35-14 loss to Denison.

The Broncos (3-5) had three touchdowns called back by the officials and a handful of injuries in the game, but  coach Billy Miller made no excuses. He said his squad needs to learn how to persevere.

"What I'm trying to teach these kids is that it doesn't make a difference what the officials call," Miller said. "It doesn't make a difference how many times we turn the ball over. That's all in the past. What we're trying to do is push on forward to the next play because the next play is the most important."

Miller continued with a quick life lesson disguised as a football talk.

"We were all kids once, we touched the stove when it was hot," Miller said. "And our parents told us not to, and we had to learn from that. But we learned from it. We learned to keep our hands away from the stove or we'll have to put butter on our fingers. If we can learn from these things and learn from the pain and say we don't want to feel like that ... we'll grow up."

But the growing pains of a young Denton team were apparent against Denison (6-1). The Broncos fumbled five times — losing two — and amassed only 186 yards of offense. Quarterback Landry Kinne was held to 134 yards and a touchdown in the air. Running back Xylohn Posey returned to the starting lineup but was held to only 64 yards.

Kinne and his teammates had a positive attitude after the game despite the frustrations and injuries. Denton receiver Isaiah Wofford went down with a serious injury with nine minutes left in the third, having to be carted off to a waiting ambulance.

Miller said he did not have an update on Wofford's condition, but he was taken to the hospital.

"I love my teammates," Kinne said. "We have to practice 100 percent. We have a lot of leaders on this young team. We just have to be uplifting and work through it."

After a scoreless first quarter, the Yellow Jackets needed only one play to spark a second quarter in which the teams combined for 35 points.

Running back Ty McFail busted out of the backfield with a 74-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 in favor of Denison with 11:49 to play in the first half. Denton milked the clock on the ensuing drive and got rewarded for it in the end.

Kinne scrambled around before shoveling a pass to Posey, who powered through two Yellow Jackets defenders to fall across goal line to tie the game at 7 with 5:09 to play in the half. A 2-yard Kenny Gaffney run put Denison up 14-7 two minutes later, and Denton leveled things on the ensuing kickoff as Elijah Thibodeaux took it 82 yards for a touchdown to add to his first quarter interception.

McFail popped up on the box score once more with a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining in the half to put the Yellow Jackets up 21-14 at the break. The Broncos sported 183 total yards at the break compared to Denison's 267.

The second half was more of the same for Denison as the Yellow Jackets tacked on two more touchdowns. Quarterback Austin Emery punched in a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 28-14 before Gaffney punched it in from 2 yards out to make it 35-14.

The Broncos now prepare for another crucial clash at Wichita Falls Rider next Thursday.
