Denton’s Josh Jones has earned a spot in the 42nd Texas State Open after finishing in a tie for second in one of several qualifying tournaments.
Jones, playing at Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth, fired a 2-under-par 70 on Monday to earn his spot in the Texas State Open, to be played Aug. 2-5 at Lewisville’s Lakes at Castle Hills. The Texas State Open is sponsored by the Northern Texas Section of the PGA, and past winners include Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw and Jeff Maggert.
Donald Grossart of Irving took first place at Waterchase with a 69, while Jones and Dillon Watkins of Newark tied for second.
Denton’s Mark Merki and Aubrey’s Jeff Christie failed in their attempt to qualify Tuesday at Great Southwest Golf Club. Christie shot a 2-over 73 and Merki shot a 77.
Qualifying continues over the next several weeks, with Lantana Golf Club hosting a second-chance event July 30.
