After a thrilling victory late Friday night over Tyler John Tyler in the Class 4A Division I semifinals, the Guyer Wildcats had to wait a day to see whom they would face in the state championship game.

The Wildcats (13-2) will meet Georgetown at noon Saturday at Arlington’s Cowboys Stadium. Georgetown (15-0) defeated Leander Rouse (10-5) 42-14 on Saturday in Leander.

The Wildcats survived a furious John Tyler rally to pull out a 57-53 victory despite the Lions recovering two onside kicks late in the game, erasing a 19-point deficit they faced with six minutes remaining, and briefly taking a 53-50 lead.

Guyer rushed for a school-record 612 yards in the victory, led by junior quarterback Jerrod Heard, who set single-game school records for carries (35) and rushing yards (318) while scoring four touchdowns.

The Wildcats will be playing for the first state championship in school history. They lost 24-21 to Cibolo Steele in the 2010 Class 5A Division II state final.
