WEATHERFORD — Two weeks ago, the Trophy Club Nelson girls swept the top two positions at the District 5-4A tournament, and the Nelson boys were attempting to do the same thing Monday and Tuesday.

The Guyer Wildcats didn’t let that happen, rallying on the back nine at Canyon West Golf Club on Tuesday to take second in the tournament and earn a berth in next week’s Region I tournament in Abilene. It is only the second time the Guyer boys team has advanced past the district level.

“I’m really proud of this group,” Guyer coach Roddy Adams said. “It was a total team effort. We played steady and did what we had to do.”

Nelson claimed the team title with a 36-hole total of 597, while Guyer took second with a 635 — 15 strokes better than Nelson’s “B” team (650). Wichita Falls finished fourth with a two-day total of 654, and the Guyer “B” team was fifth at 685.

Heading into the final nine holes, Guyer held a four-stroke advantage over the B-team Bobcats. Guyer turned the four-stroke lead into a 15-stroke margin to advance as a team to regionals.

“We played really well on the back nine on Monday, and I felt really good about our chances on Tuesday,” Adams said. “I just let them all know where we stood after the front nine and to approach it as if we were in match play on the back nine. All we needed to do is to just beat the Byron Nelson player in each group.”

Nelson’s Johnny Jones took the individual title with rounds of 72 and 70 for a 142 total. Teammate Hayden Springer (70-75) was second with a 145.

The Wildcats were led by their lone senior, Kyle Hodges. The Sam Houston State signee shot a 79 Monday but came back with a 77 on Tuesday for a 156 total and a tie for sixth place.

Guyer sophomore Jeremiah Earle (75-82) finished in a tie for eighth with a 157, while sophomore Brady Handley shot 81 and 80 for a 161 and 11th place. Freshman Conner Ross (79-85) finished 14th with a 164 total, and junior Garrett Underwood (84-82) was 15th with a 166.

The Region I tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday at Diamondback Golf Club, with the top three teams advancing to the April 29-30 state tournament at Onion Creek Club in Austin.
